KUALA LUMPUR – Political activists are now barred from teaching Islam in the state as per the decree by Sultan of Selangor Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
The state’s religious council (Mais) said in a statement today that the sultan decreed that Islam should not be politicised and used as political material by any party, especially in Selangor’s mosques and suraus.
Mais chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the move is to maintain the sanctity of Islam and to avoid its misuse by any party that can lead to slander, discord and division among Muslims.
He added that the council has been ordered by the sultan to revoke by December 31 the teaching credentials given to political activists – the rest will still be subject to a review.
“Under the order of the sultan of Selangor, the Mais credentials committee will review all Islamic teaching credentials issued in the state. Any credentials given to political activists will be revoked effective December 31.
“However, members of the state executive council who hold the Islamic affairs portfolio may still deliver Islamic teachings provided they do not touch on political matters. This exemption is in line with the sultan’s orders.”
Aziz said that teaching Islam without a certificate is an offense and if found guilty, the accused is liable to a RM3,000 fine, or a jail term of two years, or both. – The Vibes, December 28, 2021
